#Synod208: Second week, Sr. Sally's words

"Monday morning we continued our work in small groups sharing amendments to Part I of the Instrumentum Laboris. The groups, are a mixture of Cardinals, Bishops, and a few laity.  In all groups the youth spoke freely and offered wonderful reality based suggestions which were received with openness. The youth and the sisters present are having an impact on the groups and on what is being written.

Tuesday we listened to the summary reports from the groups. There was a lot of resonance and clear focus on engaging in different ways of listening to the youth, including a new openness to them and stressing authentic dialogue. The focus is on creating relationships and journeying together. Some groups mentioned the desire to use modern technology more and becoming a positive part of the digital world. 

Today we began the four minute presentations on Part II. Some focused on the Church allowing the young people to be the protagonists. One presenter invited us to embrace the option for young people. It reminded me of our choice years ago to live our option for the poor. Now, it is the youth who are a large part of “the poor”."

The Synod, a time of grace Ten days after the end of my mission at the Bishops' Conference on August 31, after completing my move from my Xavier community of Vanves to Toronto for the beginning of November, I arrived in Rome to prepare myself for the Youth Synod which took place from October 3 to 28. I was appointed by Pope Francis to participate as an observer in this ecclesial event that will so mark for me the end of ten years of ministry at the National Service for the Evangelization of Youth and for Vocations. I received this appointment as a very beautiful gift to close this stage of my life, and at the same time  I read it again today as a new beginning, an entry into a new period of sabbatical, opening up new horizons that are still unknown. Sisters offer their take on the Synod of Bishops

Seven women religious are participating in the Synod of Bishops on Young People, and offer their unique take on it, affirming that young people are truly being heard. Sr. Nathalie Becquart from France, Sr. Teresina Cheng Chaoying from China, Sr. Sally Marie Hodgdon from the US, Sr. Mina Kwon from Korea, Sr. Alessandra Smerilli from Italy, Sr. Lucy Muthoni Nderi from Kenya and Sr. María Luisa Berzosa González from Spain are representing women religious at the Synod of Bishops on Young People. They held a press conference on Monday evening. Before fielding questions, two of the English-speaking sisters provided their unique take on what is happening. Quelques enjeux et défis pour le synode des jeunes Mercredi 3 octobre s’ouvrira le synode des évêques sur « les jeunes, la foi et le discernement vocationnel ». Celui-ci se déroulera à Rome du 3 au 28 octobre sous la présidence du Pape François en présence de représentants du monde entier.
